Electronic Resources - Databases

Certain databases provide users with access to thousands of images. The Potter Library has access to rich sources that would be useful to you in your research. What is most important to understand is many databases, unlike Internet sources, will allow you to save and organize images.

Search like you would in the catalog, using your keywords. For example:

"costume design"
fashion
costume
Edwardian
"Paul Poiret"

Search the catalog or a database using a few keywords on your topic and enter them into the search box. TIP: Don't write out a sentence. Your results will be few or zero.

How do you get keywords. Write out what you are looking for. For example, I want to find images on men's Edwardian fashion.
Look at the sentence. What are your key words? I want to find images on men's Edwardian fashion.

Men, Edwardian and fashion are what you would use for your search.

TIP: DON'T STOP THERE! As you research, you may need to refine your searches. Remember about broadening and narrowing your search. For example, gay rights and adoption may be too broad. You may need to narrow to a region or time period.

Additional Tricks for Searching Databases

Always go back and revise your search! Look at using different terms and synonyms.
Use the Subject Terms or Thesaurus link in databases to find the best search (or descriptor) terms to use.
When using a phrase, use quotation marks. The words in the phrase will then be searched together. Ex. "costume design"
Try to switch to the Advanced Search page in a database. This will give you more control over your results.
Try to use Boolean Operators - AND, OR - when running a search.

What's Boolean? A way to help narrow and broaden your search.

AND: narrows your search. Ex. "Victorian dress" AND men
OR: broadens your search. Ex. costume ORfashion

Always check your spelling if the catalog or database results are zero.
To look for full-text use the "check availability at Ramapo", "primary catalog" or "check availability" links in the databases.

Try not to completely rely on the Internet for your research. The Potter Library has many books on fashion and the history of fashion, which may be useful in your search.

Finding Books at the Potter Library

Library Catalog: use this link to find books, government documents, reserve items, music, movies and journal titles (NOTJOURNALARTICLES) in our library.
Search the catalog using a few keywords on your topic and enter them into the search box. TIP: Don't write out a sentence. Your results will be few or zero.

How do you get keywords?

Write out what you are looking for. For example, I need costume designs in the Edwardian Era.
Look at the sentence. What are your keywords? I need ideas for costume designs during the Edwardian Era.
"costume designs" and Edwardian are what you would use for your search.

If you find an appropriate title, use the Subjects, etc. tab located on the top of a catalog record ( ) to get to all the items covering similar subject areas.

TIP: DON'T STOP THERE! As you research, you may need to refine your searches. Remember about broadening and narrowing your search. For example, fashion can replace costume design. Think of alternative ways of getting to the same subject areas.

Keep in mind...

Google is a tremendous source of information BUT should not be the ONLY place to do research. Some of the information you find on google is authorative and accurate but some of it is not. Often, it is hard for students to determine whether the site or article they found was written by a scholar in the field or a 5th grader. The library buys many databases that cover a multitude of subject areas. Within many of these databases, there are journal articles, and reports that are researched and written by scholars.

Suggested websites:

University of Washington Fashion Plate Collection

An extensive collection of fashion plates taken from the original fashion plates collected by Blanche Payne and others. These images have been cataloged and carefully stored for preservation purposes in archival housing at the University of Washington. Many of these plates are from some of the leading French, British, American, and other continental fashion journals of the 19th century and early 20th century. You may search many different ways, such as by subject or time period.

New York Public Library Digital Image Collection (Main Site)

For those who seek knowledge and inspiration from visual materials, the Picture Collection Online presents more than 30,000 digitized images from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original photographs, prints and postcards, mostly created before 1923. Recommended searching by Subject and limit to "Clothing & Dress" being careful to narrow to a certain country and date (1910-1919).

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens – businessmen and financiers as well as leading artists and thinkers of the day – who wanted to create a museum to bring art and art education to the American people. The Collection Database is a searchable database of artworks and related materials from the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. An individual database record includes information about an object as well as images, when available. The Museum's curators have selected several works of note within the Collection Database as Highlights of the collection. Due to the extremely large number of objects in the Museum's permanent collection, not all artworks are currently available in the Collection Database or complete.

Victoria and Albert Museum

The purpose of the Victoria and Albert Museum is to enable everyone to enjoy its collections and explore the cultures that created them; and to inspire those who shape contemporary design. If you with to download high resolution images, you must register with a free account for the museum website. You may order up to 30 high resolution images at a time to be sent to your computer. You will be sent an email message to inform you when they are ready to be downloaded.

Edwardian Fashion (from Victoriana)

Commercial site providing access to a variety of images related to Edwardian fashion. IMPORTANT: This page connects users to images from the Gazette du Bon Ton, an important fashion magazine from the early 1900s.

Fashion of the 1910s (Wikipedia)

Useful images, but not recommended for citation in a paper. Site provides links to external sites. Disclaimer from your librarian: Always be careful when using information from Wikipedia. Since it is an open site that anyone can edit, you never know where the content is coming from.

Fashion Era

Fashion-era contains 710 content rich, illustrated pages of Fashion History, Costume History, Clothing, Fashions and Social History. Click here for the Edwardian Costume History.

Costumes.org

Main purpose of the site is costume patterns for sale. Site creator does permit linking to the site and using images for educational use. Organized by subject areas. When searching on a particular subject, for example, corsets, check the link labeled "History" to see if the category is organized by date or time period. Many links point to the Fashion Era website.

Art Deco Prints and Posters

Online image commercial collection with access to many graphics from the Gazette du Bon Ton. Search by limiting the sub-category to "Fashion & Theater."

Gentleman's Emporium

Commercial site for costume sale. Most costumes are Victorian in style, but a few Edwardian images are scattered throughout. Contains many images of a variety of men's clothing.

Sewing Central

Commercial site for historic patterns.

Past Patterns

Commercial site for accurate Federal, Jacksonian, Civil War, Gilded Age, Edwardian and WWI up to WWII Clothing Patterns for Men, Women and Children.

Victorian and Edwardian Photographs

Private collect of photographs of the Edwardian period. Disclaimer of site creator: All the images on my sites are unique photographs from my own collection and must not be copied, printed, or used in any way without my permission they are not in the public domain, or available from any other source.

Period Fashions Reference Library

A section of the site Vintage Victorian. Provides images and photographs of the Edwardian Era.

Not sure if the site you found is authoritative and reliable?

Try looking at the Potter Library's suggested subject resources web links. These resources have been reviewed by librarians and are considered authoritative.
If you must venture onto Google, remember you need to

look for who wrote the page and figure out what the purpose of the document is
understand who wrote the page and if they have authority on the subject
look how the information is presented
how current the information is (if necessary)

Outside Avenues

Sometimes the materials you need are not located in the Potter Library. An alternative avenue you can explore is checking to see what other libraries own.

Where you can look:

NJ Libraries

If you need a resource and would like to check if a nearby library owns it, try searching the VALE catalog.

WorldCat

WorldCat connects you to the collections and services of more than 10,000 libraries worldwide.

How you can get what you need:

Interlibrary Loan

Use InterlibraryLoan if we don't have a book or article that you need.

Step 1. Pick the appropriate form (either book or article) and fill out the required (*) fields.
Step 2. Fill out the online form using your Ramapo Email (it will not be processed without that email address).
Step 3. Submit your form(s).
Step 4. Wait for your item to come in. CAUTION: give yourself time (it can take longer than 2 weeks in some cases)

Don't want to wait?

Use our our reciprocal borrowing program if the item is located at one of our participating libraries and you are able to get there.
How does it work?

Instructions for Ramapo Faculty, staff and students:

1. Fill out a VALE Reciprocal Borrowing Application Form (available from the Library’s Reference desk – 3rd floor).

2. Present the signed application form along with a photo ID at the participating library’s circulation desk. You will be issued borrowing privileges and/or a guest borrower card. Privileges are for one academic year and expire June 30th. To renew your borrowing privileges, you must present a new application form.

3. You will be responsible for complying with the lending library’s circulation policies, including loan periods, overdue fines, recalls, all replacement and processing fees, and for returning all borrowed items directly to the lending library.

Using JStor

Finding images in JStor

To find images in JStor, search like you would for articles.

After you produce a list of results. Notice the tabs across the top of your result's list.
Click the tab that says Images in JStor. This will generate a list of thumbnails of those images in JStor.

Linking to images found in JStor to ArtStor

To link to images in ArtStor, simply click the tab that says Images in ArtStor. This should bring you into ArtStor. NOTE: Make sure pop-up blockers are off.

Using ArtStor

Profiles

Sign up for an account. This will allow you to have a profile to create folders in order to save and organize images. ArtStor will ask you to provide an email and password.

After you login, your profile will appear on the search screen. You can see that you can directly link into your folders and image groups.

Searching

Searching can be easy.
BASIC SEARCH: Link using the catalog, you can use a simple keyword search. For example, "Edwardian Dress." Any images containing these keywords, will appear as thumbnails. To enlarge the image, double click. To select the image to be placed in a new or existing folder/image group, click once. NOTE: Once you have retrieve images, you may sort by "Title," "Creator" and "Date."

ADVANCED SEARCH: Multiple search options. Multiple keyword search in many different fields (title, creator), as well as by geography, collection, classification and date/date range. These different areas may also be combined any number of ways.

Saving Images

To save images, highlight the image(s) you wish to save.
After you have selected your images, click the link at the top of the screen which says .
A drop-down menu will appear. Select
You may choose to pick from the three options given:

If you wish to save image(s) to an existing folder, pick the desired folder:

If you wish to create a new image group, name the folder properly:

Viewing Saved Images

To view images you have opted to save, go back to the link and select .
A list of your image groups will appear. After you decide which folder you wish to open, double click on the title of the folder. NOTE: your image groups will always be subsets of "My Work Folder."

Image Sharing

You can use this guide to save and organize images.
It's easy!

FIRST STEP before you can add or create anything... you MUST join this site!
(see top right corner of the site )

Adding Photos

Step 1. Go to the Photos tab at the top of the page.
Step 2. Click the add photos link on the right side of the screen.
Step 3. Upload your image two ways:
From your computer
Click and add the image from a saved file.
From the web
Enter the web address of the image you wish to save.
Step 4. Click add photo
Step 5. To keep your images organized, make sure you enter a "Title," "Description," and "Keyword tags."

Adding Albums

Step 1. Go to the Photos tab at the top of the page.
Step 2. Click the add album tab on the top of the Photos screen.
Step 3. Give your new album a "Title" and "Description."
Step 4. Upload images two ways:
From your photos on the guide
Click on the image(s) from the photos previously uploaded.
Upload new images
See Step 3 of "Adding Photos."
Step 5. Click add photo
Step 6.To keep your images organized, make sure you enter a "Title," "Description," and "Keyword tags."

Begin uploading images and creating albums!
